CMCC is the Italian research centre on climate science and policy, established in 2005 with the support of the Italian Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea and the Ministry of Education, University and Research. Its activities focus on the development and applications of models of climate dynamics, impacts of climate change, adaptation and mitigation policies, operational oceanography and decision support systems. CMCC is involved in proposal’s Task 8.3, whose objective is to develop a system for ship routing risk mapping. Starting from knowledge of the oceanographic and meteorological fields affecting vessel seakeeping, the system will estimate risk and cost associated to known routes in the Atlantic Ocean. CMCC’s expertise in operational oceanography and ship routing decision support systems will be employed for implementation of this task. CMCC is also involved in proposal’s Task 1.3, conducting Observing System Simulation Experiments with an ensemble based methodology, using the CMCC global ocean physical reanalysis. The relative impact of different observing networks will be studied using CMCC’s expertise in climate dynamics.
