European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international organisation supported by 31 Member States. Its principal objectives are the development of numerical methods for medium-range weather forecasting, with particular effort on early warnings of severe weather. Complementary goals relevant to this proposal are: i)To improve the quality and scope of monthly and seasonal-to-interannual forecasts; ii) To carry out climate monitoring through regular re-analyses of the Earth-system; iii) To contribute towards the optimization of the Global Observing System. Approximately 95 staff work in the Research Department on all aspects of the forecast and data assimilation systems. The result of this research effort is one of the most comprehensive earth-system models available anywhere. ECMWF produces operationally ocean reanalyses, continuosly updated in real time, to provide ocean initial conditions for coupled forecasts, for monitoring and for initialization of decadal forecasts (by external partners), and contribute to MyOcean. They are based on the NEMO and NEMOVAR assimilating SST, SeaLevel, SeaIce concentration and insitu T/S profiles from a variety of platforms, reanalyes contribute to MyOcean is developing a prototype of coupled ocean-atmosphere-seaice data assimilation system, which will be used in future reanalysis of the earth system, starting with ERA-CLIM2.
