The European Marine Board (EMB) is Europe’s foremost marine science policy think-tank, delivering strategy and foresight to advance European research focused on seas and oceans. Established in 1995 as an expert Board of the European Science Foundation (ESF), in 2014 the EMB has 36 Member Organisations (MOs) comprised of National Research Funding Organisations and Research Performing Organisations (including university networks) across Europe. EMB provides a strategic pan-European platform for expressing a collective vision of European marine research priorities to meet future science and societal challenges and opportunities. Adopting a strategic role, the Board provides a forum within which marine research policy advice to national agencies and governments and to European institutions and agencies is developed, with the objective of promoting the establishment of a European Research Area (ERA) for marine science and technology. The Board is supported by a six-member Secretariat based in Ostend, Belgium, which implements strategic actions and activities on its behalf and works to actively link the Board with other relevant European stakeholder networks, EU institutions, international partners (including relevant networks in the US and Canada) and the wider marine and maritime stakeholder community. The Secretariat also participates on behalf of the Board in relevant Framework Programme coordination and support actions.
