Instytut Oceanologii Polskiej Akademii Nauk (IO PAN)

IO PAN is a dynamic organization with 183 employees, 43 with doctoral degrees and 31 professors and associate professors in Earth Sciences and Oceanology. Our research activities are organized within five departments: physical oceanography, marine physics, marine chemistry and biochemistry, marine ecology, genetics and marine biotechnology and marine pollution laboratory. The Institute is the most internationally active oceanographic institution in Poland and one of the most active in Central and Eastern Europe. Research activities have been especially intensified during the last 10 years, mainly as a result of expanding involvement in international collaboration as a consequence of new opportunities that emerged when Poland joined the EU in May 2004. The Institute participates(ed) in several scientific consortia aimed at enhancing marine-oriented research capabilities in Europe e.g. BALTEX, EuroGOOS, MarBEF, EUR-OCEANS, EurOcean and more. As a result of these activities, IO PAN has gained recognition for research competence in the shelf seas and coastal regions including the Baltic and European Arctic Seas. Through formal and informal collaborations, the Institute is heavily involved in research in the North Atlantic, mainly focusing on marine chemistry and biogeochemistry.
