Interdisciplinary Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR)

The CIIMAR – Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research - is a research and advanced training institution associated to the University of Porto. Its mission is to develop high-quality research, promote technological development and support public policies in the area of Marine and Environmental Sciences. The centre has been actively involved in the integration and development of Marine Sciences at EU and globaly through the participation in various platforms and coordination actions e.g. MARINE BOARD , European Network of Excellence MABEFF – Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Function, and Marbef+ , MARS - European Network of Marine Research Institutes and Stations, EUROMARINE – Integration of Marine Networks of Excellence, EMBOS - Development and implementation of a pan-European Marine Biodiversity Observatory System, KNEU - Developing a Knowledge Network for EUropean expertise on biodiversity and ecosystem services to inform policy making and economic sectors and the global programs as CoML - Census of Marine Life until 2010 and GEO BON – Group on Earth Observation - Biodiversity Observation Network. Its member have been national representatives in the Framework Programs (Marine and Environmental programs), and at UN Conventions and platforms as CBD – Convention on Biological Diversity and IPBES - Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. Many of these platforms will be heavy users of data collected by the observation systems and so are important stakeholders of AtlantOS. So Ciimar is well placed to participate in the development of the Atlantic Observation System proposed by AtlantOS by linking it with several European and international initiatives.
