The Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) is a foundation under the umbrella of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). NIOZ is the national oceanographic institution of The Netherlands. Its main tasks are to perform fundamental sea-going scientific research and to support sea-going research by other Dutch institutes and universities by means of equipment and specialised personnel. In case of a project like ATLANTOS, equipment and personnel involved is the ocean-going research vessel Pelagia equipped with a deep-water multibeam echo sounder and the Data Management Group (DMG). The DMG consists of experienced people and not only stores the data collected by NIOZ scientists, but also makes this available to the international scientific community.
