EuroMapApp

The EuroMapApp task aims to integrate the European deep seafloor mapping results in the High Seas into a seamless whole and put these results into a widely accessible format allowing immediate visualization of the seafloor for the specialist and non-specialist user alike. A prime requirement for making the European bathymetric data available in the GeoMapApp format is to have the software running and being used to present local data in Europe [GEOMAR]. A database of available information from partner institutions will be assembled and put into this format [D2.3; GEOMAR, Ifremer, NIOZ, NERC-BODC]. The task will also work together with national data centers and others to make additional datasets available and visualization available [D2.10; GEOMAR, Ifremer, NIOZ, NERC-BODC]. The EMODnet Bathymetry/SeaDataNet-GeoSeas data management system will be used to access relevant High Seas data covering the whole Atlantic, make Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT) map representations of these data, and provide feedback into the EMODnet data formats and access protocols. The maps will be linked back to original data holdings, allowing users to identify and request the full data set if needed. The bathymetric data in map form will allow linkage to other European geo-referenced data sets (physical oceanography, SST, etc.) including those produced by AtlantOS. This will be aided through development of portals to link other European marine databases into the same map view. Uses from assisting detailed oceanographic modeling of deep water circulation and mixing to benthic habitat mapping are immediately apparent.

Deliverables:

D2.3 Bathymetric Integration: Integration of High Seas bathymetry holdings of partner organisations into EuroMapApp which involves making an inventory of the data, determining freedom of access (quality controlling the data and integration into a Multi-Resolution Topography PM36

D2.10 Bathymetry Visualization: Integration of data from at least two additional European repositories into the EuroMapApp system as pilot project to make Europe´s bathymetric data visible and usable by all. PM45
