OceanSITES biogeochemistry

The network of fixed point biogeochemical observatories in AtlantOS addresses major observational gaps in terms of variables central to the MSFD. In particular, time series data will be obtained on biological EOVs such as zooplankton, phytoplankton, particles and metagenomic diversity to assess the structure and function of the biological communities. Further, pressures such as ocean acidification or pollution by microplastics and other hydrocarbons causing variations in biogeochemical EOVs (e.g. in carbonate system parameters, the dissolved organic carbon pool or fluorescence-derived ocean colour) need to be monitored [D3.17] [all partners: GEOMAR, AWI, NERC, PLOCAN, Ribocon]. In addition, the data management of the network will be considerably enhanced by standardizing variables across all networks, and by links with other observing systems [D3.13] [all partners]. Plans for long-term sustainability and internationalization of the EU network will be implemented via OceanSITES and other programmes [D3.8], [NERC-NOC with AWI, GEOMAR, PLOCAN]. PLOCAN is planning to invest in a sequential zooplankton sampler and a sediment trap with temperature sensor and a phytoplankton sampler to be put at ESTOC to sample zooplankton and to measure phytoplankton and particles. Close collaboration will be maintained with other EU funded programmes such as FixO3, JERICO and EuroFleets in addition to other components of AtlantOS like Carbon-VOS and CPR, as well as with Transatlantic international activities. AtlantOS will support the exchange of experts and networks with some dedicated travel budget.
