Task 6.1

Sensors and new instrumentation

This task accelerates the TRL of sensors and instruments to address key gaps. It will also create ten-year roadmaps for strategic developments for IAOOS providing a resource for global ocean observations of the future [D6.1; All partners: AWI, CONTROS, DTU, GEOMAR, Ifremer, NERC, TELABS]. We focus on priority EOVs, initially targeting profiling floats and gliders but in turn addressing widespread deployment on all IAOOS platforms. We will deliver technologies for pH, pCO2, DIC, and TA, (fast) oxygen, and nutrients [D6.3] [ CONTROS, NERC, GEOMAR]. We will also enhance IAOOS capabilities to sample water and particles for biological and (meta)genomic analysis by a) developing water and filter (filtrand) sampler technologies [NERC, AWI, TELABS] and b) adapting the only oceanic genomic sensor currently at TRL 8 [DTU, NERC, TELABS] – the Environmental Sample Processor (by MBARI, USA) [D6.3]. We will work closely with the 4 multifunctional sensors projects (,,,, and the 5 biosensor projects (,,,, funded through FP7 “The Oceans of Tomorrow (2013)” call to pull through innovations into our basin scale programme [NERC]. We will provide testing and opportunities for integration with ocean observing networks and platforms (i.e. to enable progress to TRL 7) for technologies coming out of this research that reach TRL 5 or above [D6.3; all partners].


D6.1 Sensors and instrumentation roadmap: Report that includes a ten year roadmap for strategic development of sensor and instrument technology for IAOOS and therefore global ocean observation. This will include a three year plan of developments, innovations, and validations that will be undertaken through IAOOS. This will link to the Exploitation Plan (D11.3) PM12

D6.3 Validation of sensor and instrumentation innovations: Validated prototypes of new and enhanced biogeochemical and biological sensors and instruments. Validation will be undertaken in the laboratory, in test scenarios, and by deployment in operational conditions and calibrated / quality controlled using metrology standards developed in T6.2. PM40
