Task 6.2

Common metrology and best practices

This task will develop existing centres of gravity to develop common metrology techniques and best practice (including standards) for measurement of priority EOVs ensuring dataset accuracy, precision and reliable intercomparisons between different technologies, laboratories, sampling locations and times. We will develop an implementation framework and robust validation schemes that ensure agreement between methods as well as methodological reproducibility at all stages of the analytical process from sample acquisition and processing, through to analytical and reporting protocols. The partners will develop the metrology infrastructure and disseminate best practice through dedicated workshops with the following topics: genomic observatories [Ribocon], nutrients and oxygen sensor observations [Ifremer], carbonate chemistry sensors measurements [IO PAN] and trace elements measurements [UOP]. In addition, best practice manuals will be produced by these partners from the individual workshops for free on-line dissemination [D6.4; all partners: GEOMAR, AWI, Ribocon, UOP, IO PAN]. This task will develop a reference material for trace elements linked to the International GEOTRACES programme [GEOMAR, UOP], create genomic standards and organize their community analysis [Ribocon], and standardize DNA extraction and sequencing [D6.5; Ribocon, AWI]. The best practice workshops on trace element measurements and genomics will be directly linked to the reference material production [GEOMAR, UOP] and genomic/DNA extraction work [Ribocon, AWI] to communicate metrological techniques and community intercomparison activities.

Deliverables:
